Club Treasures: Train nameplate

Sunderland were one of a number of clubs to have a train named after them complete with a train nameplate.

In Sunderland’s case this came about on April 18 1936 when The Lads were feared throughout the land. Champions in 1936 and FA Cup winners in 1937, with the Charity Shield coming to Wearside in between for good measure, Johnny Cochrane’s side were as unstoppable as a runaway train.

There was a nameplate on either side of the locomotive 2854. One of these is now in the possession of the city council with the other having pride of place above the players’ tunnel at the Stadium of Light.

Q. Where is it display?

A. Above the players’ tunnel, seen as the players go into the dressing room.
