Report: Norton & Stockton Ancients Ladies 0-4 SAFC Women

Sunderland Women Under-23s won the County Cup as they beat Norton & Stockton Ancients Ladies at Eppleton.

Mary Corbyn and Ella West got on the scoresheet to give the Lasses a two-goal lead going into the second half.

Substitute Jess Barker scored a brace in the second half to seal the cup victory.

Niamh Boothroyd drove down the left in the early stages, firing a cross into Niyah Dunbar, but her shot went wide of the near post.

Strong play from the Lasses came down the right again with Dunbar and Boothroyd causing problems again – Milly Cairn’s resulting shot on the edge of the box went wide.

The Black Cats opened the scoring 10 minutes in as Boothroyd’s cross found Corbyn at the back post – the winger composed herself and rifled a shot past the goalkeeper.

On the 20th minute, Corbyn beat her marker down the left side and teed up Cairns on the edge – her shot was held by the ‘keeper.

Sunderland doubled their lead on the 29th minute with a dangerous ball from Eve Parker falling to West – the defender struck a powerful shot into the top corner.

The Lasses scored another early in the second half as Emmi Weiss’ cross dropped to substitute Jess Barker, who was on hand to tap home the third of the match.

Sophie Sutton drove through the centre of the pitch to slot Parker in, but her shot was fired wide of the near post. Minutes later, Boothroyd lashed a shot just past the post from distance.

Ellie Jardine was called into action on a few occasions late into the game but dealt with any danger coming her way to maintain the clean sheet.

Barker doubled her tally for the evening as West’s cross-field pass was flicked on by Boothroyd, and the Under-16 star struck her second into the bottom corner.

After a successful County Cup campaign, the young team now only need one win in the league to clinch the title as they play Bishop Auckland on Sunday.
