Report: Huddersfield Town 1-0 Sunderland AFC

Huddersfield Town 1-0 Sunderland AFC

Sunderland were defeated by Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium in the Sky Bet Championship.

Matthew Pearson’s 37th-minute goal was the difference between the two sides as the three points stayed with the Terriers.

Michael Beale made one change from the side that beat Plymouth on Saturday, with Jobe returning to the starting eleven in place of Patrick Roberts.

The Black Cats’ first opportunity came in the seventh minute when Rusyn cut in off the right and shot towards goal, but his chance was saved by Lee Nicholls.

After a tentative start to the game, Sorba Thomas threatened, closing down the defence and breaking down the left - the ball fell to David Kasumu on edge of box, but his shot goes just past the post.

Huddersfield took the lead with the Terriers forcing a save from Anthony Patterson from a free-kick, and Pearson bundled the rebound into the back of the net.

On the stroke of half-time, Neil’s long-range strike was spilled by the ‘keeper, but the resulting corner amounted to no further chance in the half.

The 52nd minute saw Koroma’s free-kick strike the post. Sunderland broke down the other end, with Jobe’s effort going straight at the ‘keeper.

Jon Worthington’s side almost had a two-goal lead in the 57th minute, with Jack Rudoni’s header cleared off the line by Jobe.

Another Sunderland short corner almost proved fruitful through Neil again, with his cross-shot curling past everyone and went just inches wide of the far corner.

Coming off the bench, Roberts had an opportunity from range to test Nicholls, but his curling left-footed effort was blocked but the Huddersfield defence.

The Black Cats tried to probe in the final minutes, with Mason Burstow slotting Trai Hume through on goal – the full back forces a good save from Nicholls.

A point was almost rescued at the death as Luke O'Nien's cross deflected off Tom Lees, with Nicholls reacting quickly to tip it over.

The Lads are back on the road again at the weekend as they make the trip to St. Andrew’s to take on Birmingham.
