Talking points: Mike Dodds previews Watford

Mike Dodds has been speaking to the media ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship fixture against Watford FC.

MD on the passing of Charlie Hurley:

From my perspective, there are no words to explain how important he was to not just Sunderland but the footballing world.

Our thoughts go to the family and friends. I have only been here a short period of time, but Charlie was one of the first players explained to me in terms of legends on Wearside.

The general outpour speaks volumes of how important he was.

MD on training this week:

There have been honest conversations following last week. We gave Millwall too many opportunities to do what they do best.

We’ve debriefed and now we have to move forward. All focus is on this Saturday for another big game against Watford.

MD on the final two fixtures:

We will be as strong as possible in terms of the team. We will always look at the opposition and see what suits.

We’re not going to be experimenting with anything, but we are constantly looking at how we can hurt Watford.

MD on Tom Cleverly:

He clearly deserves the appointment. They have changed their style and are very well organised.

They have an identity. They have picked up positive results and he has merited the job. I really hope in the long term, Tom is a massive success for them.

MD on Watford:

Every game in the Championship is a tough game. Tom has changed their approach, but it is our responsibility to nullify their strengths and capitalise on their weaknesses.

MD on injuries:

Dennis Cirkin is back training with the group. I don’t think he will be available this weekend and then we have a decision to make.

We have to see whether it is worth risking him after being out for so long.

Nazariy Rusyn is partly training.
