Time to go again: Leadbitter seeks reaction after international break

Grant Leadbitter is determined to put Saturday’s first defeat of the season behind him as quickly as possible.

Sunderland face a two-week period now without a game, due to the international break, on the back of a 3-0 loss to Peterborough United.

In a game which saw the Black Cats finish with nine men, after Luke O’Nien and Charlie Wyke were dismissed, captain Leadbitter has admitted everyone must put the defeat behind them as quickly as possible, pick themselves up and go again.

With a trip to Accrington Stanley next up, the 34-year-old has also called for his team-mates to get back on the winning trail and look to better their unbeaten start of seven games.

“We’re Sunderland football club,” he said.

“Six games? If you’re talking 16 games, that’s what I want to be doing. I want to go 15, 16 games unbeaten – not six.

“But you swallow your defeats as good as your wins and move onto the next one.

“We don’t want to lose football games. It’s as simple as that. Sunderland football club, we hate losing games.

“We expect to win every game and the pressure is on Sunderland every game in this division.”

He continued: “But sometimes in football you have to take your medicine. You swallow it and move on.”
