The big man's big impact: Jack Ross talks all things Charlie Wyke

Jack Ross was full of praise for his players after Saturday's dramatic win, paying particular tribute to the impact of Charlie Wyke.

The big man produced a bullish performance on Wednesday night as Sunderland brushed aside Accrington Stanley 3-0.

Despite not scoring that night, Wyke was once again in a dominant mood at Rochdale on Saturday and finally got his reward with a sweet goal on the turn to cancel out Ian's Henderson's opener.

Wyke's goal ignited a frustrated Sunderland which later led to George Honeyman firing home an 89th minute winner to put the Lads level on points with second-place Barnsley, with two games in hand on them.

“Charlie is a really popular member of this group both with the staff and players,” he said.

“How he’s gone about this business even through the frustrating spells has been terrific and he would’ve been happy with his performance during the week at Accrington.

“Strikers always have that want to score goals and if you’d have seen our dressing room at the end of the game, you’d have seen how pleased the rest of the players are that he’s scored.

“He’s put a lot of work in this season and it’s been frustrating for him at times.”

He continued: “I’m delighted for him and for his for his performance again today.

“If he can keep making that contribution between now and the end of the season, he will make a big difference for us.”
