Jack Ross admitted his players must learn quickly following their first Sky Bet League One defeat of the season.
Jamie Allen poked home on 20 minutes to hand the Brewers the advantage before Kyle McFadzean headed home a second before the break.
A change was then forced upon Ross as Charlie Wyke collided with Dimitar Evtimov, with Chris Maguire coming on in the striker’s place.
Maguire then worked some magic early in the second 45, finding the net with a rocket from distance to halve the deficit.
From there, the Black Cats played with their tails up but failed to muster a second as Aiden McGeady’s effort whistled a fraction wide.
