Team news: Kimpioka starts at the SoL

Jack Ross has made wholesale changes for tonight’s Checkatrade Trophy clash with Carlisle United.

The Sunderland manager is unable to call upon 14 first-teamers for various reasons, with a host of players ruled out as others represent their respective nations.

However, it’s opened the door for several players, who will get the chance to impress the Scot and the Stadium of Light faithful.

After his opening-game penalty heroics, Robbin Ruiter comes back into the side, with Alim Ozturk, Jack Baldwin, Adam Matthews and Reece James charged with protecting the Dutchman’s goal.

Chris Maguire, Aiden McGeady and youngster Benji Kimpioka feature up top, while George Honeyman returns to captain the side.

A host of youngsters are also amongst the substitutes.

Sunderland: Ruiter, Ozturk, Baldwin, Matthews, James, McGeouch, Robson, Honeyman, Maguire, McGeady, Kimpioka.
Substitues: Patterson, O’Nien, Hackett, Diamond, Taylor, Connelly, Gamble.
