Special praise: Coleman hails Honeyman

After recalling him to the side for Saturday’s game at Loftus Road, Chris Coleman has paid tribute to George Honeyman’s unrivalled mentality.

The 23-year-old academy product has made more appearances than any other Sunderland player this season, while also contributing goals and assists from numerous positions.

A big personality in the dressing room, Honeyman has led by example this season despite his age and refused to shy away from the task at hand.

And having worked closely with the youngster since his arrival, Coleman admits he expects nothing less than 110% from the midfielder.

“I’ve been in professional football for 30 years as a player and a manager and in terms of mentality, I’ve not seen anything better than him,” said the Welshman.

“He’s a huge, huge personality, desperate to play football, desperate to play for Sunderland.”

He continued: “It bothers him for days if he plays badly, and if he’s not playing, he’s devastated.

“It’s all about the game, all about playing for Sunderland.

“His input on the game was brilliant, his energy and his enthusiasm and personality were absolutely great.

“He deserved something but you don’t always get what you deserve, I know.

“These times are tough but honestly, he’ll be much better at the end of it because he’s one of those players who’s a chip off the old block.”
