UEFA goal of the season: Embleton honoured to receive nomination

Elliot Embleton has admitted it is a great honour to be nominated for UEFA goal of the season.

Going up against the world’s best, including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Dimitri Payet and Christian Eriksen, the Sunderland youngster, 19, has been selected for the top goal after his strike for England under-19s in July against Turkey.

Speaking to safc.com about the award, Embleton admitted he was taken aback to receive the recognition.

“It’s the best goal I have scored,” he said.

“The ball got played down the left and then it got switched across. I showed quick feet on the edge of the box and then curled it into the top corner.

“I whipped it straight over the defender’s head and into the top corner. It was amazing to score it at the Euros and for my country.

“It’s a proud moment because I’ve been recognised for my work and it makes it even more special to be ranked alongside the best goals in the world.

“I was buzzing when I found out because I had just come out of the gym and people around the academy were coming up to me saying ‘well done’.

“I wasn’t sure what they were on about and then when I looked on my phone and it was all over Twitter – I couldn’t believe it.”

He continued: “It’s a great honour but I’ve still got to work hard and continue to show what I can each day in training.”
