International Round-up: Embleton scores on England U19s debut

safc.com review how Sunderland’s international players got on over the weekend…

John O’Shea and Aiden McGeady – Georgia 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Aiden McGeady came off the bench as Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualification hopes were dealt a blow in Georgia.

Shane Duffy broke the deadlock for the visitors in Group D with just four minutes played but they were pegged back before the break when Valeri Qazaishvile poked home.

Ireland remain in second place but Wales’ win over Austria has seen them close to gap on them to two points.

John O’Shea was an unused substitute.

Jonny Williams – Wales 1-0 Austria

Jonny Williams didn’t feature as Wales collected a crucial three points in their bid to reach next summer’s World Cup.

Substitute Ben Woodburn scored the game’s only goal to lift Chris Coleman’s side to within two points of the Republic of Ireland as they only managed to leave Georgia with a point.

Bryan Oviedo -  USA 0-2 Costa Rica

Full-back Bryan Oviedo played 78 minutes of Costa Rica’s 2-0 win at the Red Bull Arena Harrison on Friday.

Marcos Urena scored in either half to extend Costa Rica’s gap over the USA in Round five to six points ahead of next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Elliot Embleton – England U19 7-1 Poland U19

Sunderland midfielder Elliot Embleton capped his England U19s debut with a goal and an assist in a crushing victory over Poland yesterday.

Paul Simpson’s squad were in unforgiving form at St George’s Park as they begin their new campaign aiming to defend the Euro title which last season’s U19s lifted.

The goals came from just three players too, as a hat-trick apiece for Sheffield Wednesday’s George Hirst and Arsenal’s Edward Nketiah along with a solitary strike Embleton completed the scoring.

Poland pulled a goal back in the 56th minute through Radoslaw Kanach.

Sam Brotherton – New Zealand 6-1 Solomon Islands

Sam Brotherton completed 90 minutes as New Zealand overcame Solomon Islands with ease at the QBE Stadium on Friday.

Burnley’s new signing Chris Wood scored a hat-trick with Kosta Barbarouses, Ryan Thomas and Michael McGlinchey also finding the net.

Henry Fa’arodo got back for the visitors in the World Cup qualifier but it was too little too late as the Kiwi’s went on to run away with the victory.
