Manager's view: Moyes praises Pickford

David Moyes was pleased with Jordan Pickford’s performance during Sunderland’s 2-0 defeat to Everton.

The England international returned to action at Goodison Park following a two-month spell on the sidelines, with the youngster ruled out of action after suffering a knee injury at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

Pickford, 22, was in scintillating form prior to the festive period, during which time Vito Mannone, who missed Saturday’s game against Everton due to illness, was ruled out due to a shoulder injury.

And although Moyes acknowledged some rust during the opening exchanges, he was pleased with Pickford’s overall contribution.

“A little bit rusty maybe, but, overall, I felt he did very well,” said the Scot.

“I felt he made a couple of really important saves for us.”

He continued: “I think that Jordan’s performances in the first half of the season justified him being selected – and  his performances are why he got selected for England.

“He saved us points at the start of the season and he is back fit.

“I have a lot of faith in him and he has good competition from Vito Mannone too.”
