No excuses: Defeat frustrates Cattermole

Sunderland must make their own luck and cut out costly errors if they’re to ascend the Premier League table, says Lee Cattermole.

A frustrating evening at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday saw the Black Cats suffer a second defeat on the bounce, with Islam Slimani and Jamie Vardy on target for the red-hot Foxes.

But the reigning PL champions didn’t have it all their own way, and that left a bitter taste for Cattermole who captained a side which once again became the architects of their own downfall.

Speaking to safc.com the midfielder admitted the Black Cats were unlucky not to take something from the game, but he demanded more from his team-mates after they opened the door for the Foxes.

“It was really frustrating,” said Cattermole.

“We were right in the game when they brought on a big striker and from the first cross he scored a goal – it’s very soft and something that can’t happen at any stage of the season, but particularly when you’re in the position we’re in.”

He continued: “It’s not good enough and it can’t happen when you’ve worked as hard as we’d worked.

“It all comes down to small margins, we hit the post at 1-0 down and then they went straight up the other end to double their lead, but you can’t make any excuses.

“We were bang at it and playing well away from home at the champions – you wouldn’t have known who was where in the league – but like I said it’s small margins and suddenly the game was gone for us.

“We felt there were chances in the game and we felt we were the better team, but we’ve walked away with nothing and that sums us up at the minute.”
