Match preview: Swansea City v Sunderland

Sunderland hit the road this weekend making the long trip south to Swansea City (KO 3pm).

The Black Cats head to the Liberty Stadium with spirits high, though, having won three of their last four Premier League games.

AFC Bournemouth were the first side to fall to David Moyes’ men, with Hull City and reigning champions Leicester City following suit at the Stadium of Light.

And this weekend the Black Cats will be hoping for a repeat of last year’s trip to Swansea which saw Jermain Defoe net a superfluous hat-trick in a stunning 4-2 win.

Victory for Moyes’ side would see them move five points clear of the Swans but they cannot afford to take their foot off the gas, with three points for Bob Bradley’s team enough to see them leapfrog the Black Cats.

One thing seems certain, there will be goals.

Swansea have conceded 16 times in their last five games but during that run they have picked up four points, with Sunderland netting eight goals in the same timeframe.

And Bradley’s side have shown their attacking teeth in recent outings, netting five times in an incredible 5-4 win over Crystal Palace while failing to score in just one of their last five games.

One man who knows how to find the net at the Liberty Stadium is Fabio Borini and he could return to action this weekend.

The Italian spent three months on loan with the Swans in 2011 scoring five goals in 22 games, and he also won a penalty in the Championship play-off final as the Welsh side won promotion at Wembley.

Jan Kirchhoff and Seb Larsson, both of whom came off the bench last weekend, earned high praise from Moyes ahead of Saturday’s game and both will be hoping to play a part.

But Sunderland will be without Duncan Watmore who joined Lee Cattermole and Paddy McNair in the treatment room, with the England under-21 international ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Swansea, meanwhile, will be hoping the likes of Leroy Fer and Gylfi Sigurdsson can fire them to victory over the Black Cats, with the duo, along with Fernando Llorente, posing the biggest attacking threat.

Fer – cousin of Patrick van Aanholt – tops the Swans’ scoring charts having netted six times in the Premier League, with Sigurdsson scoring five times in all competitions.

Llorente, who won the World Cup with Spain in 2010, has three goals in 11 appearances.

Federico Fernandez and former Black Cat Ki Sung-Yeung are the only absentees.
