U18s: Atkinson on the importance of consistent performances

Having suffered three defeats on the trot, few could argue if Mark Atkinson wanted to shake things up.

However, the youth team boss believes consistency is key if his side are to alter their fortunes with a Premier League fixture against Manchester United up next on Saturday at the Academy of Light.

With three wins in their last four domestic matches, Atkinson believes an emphasis on getting the performances right are key to ensuring his spirited bunch return to winning ways sooner rather than later.

“First and foremost, it is all about development,” he said.

“That’s not to say we don’t want to win but when the lads get to the under-18s there is an emphasis on teaching the lads how to win.

“It is certainly about developing players, so they know how to win games and that’s what it comes down to.

“That is the key thing that we say to the players – they must challenge themselves and look to kick onto the under-23s.

“There are two or three who really need to be doing that now,” he continued.

“You use Josh Maja, Elliot Embleton and Joel Asoro as examples. They played in the Youth Cup last season and now they are in the first-team.”
