U18 match preview: Youth Team to entertain Liverpool

Sunderland under-18s return to Wearside this weekend targeting back-to-back home wins as Liverpool come to town.

LAST TIME OUT

Sunderland under-18s returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Tuesday as they defeated Everton. Michael Collins netted an own goal on 17 minutes to get the Black Cats on their way before Benji Kimpioka doubled their advantage a minute into the second 45.

WHERE THEY STAND

With a game in hand on the teams around them, Sunderland maintain hopes of pushing Stoke City for fifth spot. Victory over second-place Liverpool this Saturday would see them go level on points with the Potters. Liverpool, meanwhile, are looking to fend off Everton for second. The Reds head to Wearside a point clear of their Merseyside rivals while Manchester United lead the way, 10 clear of their nearest challengers, with 45 points.

MARK ATKINSON SAYS

“Last Saturday we said it was just a lack of focus or a lack of attention. When you work hard it gives you that platform to kick on, but it only comes from being hard to beat. We made a number of changes to make sure the lads stay fresh going into these games. The lads looked good. There was a great team togetherness, and everyone played their part. It was really pleasing but we have got to go again on Saturday. We have got to forget about what we have done and focus on Liverpool this weekend.”

CAN I WATCH?

The match will be played at the Academy of Light this Saturday, kick-off 11am. Please note spectators are not allowed to attend as this match will be played behind closed doors.
