Learning curve: Hume on Doncaster defeat

Denver Hume focussed on the positives following Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers in the Checkatrade Trophy.

The full-back completed 90 minutes at the Keepmoat Stadium but he was unable to help his side avoid defeat, as Rovers clinched a narrow win to knock the Lads out of the competition.

Issam Ben Khemis’ second-half strike provided the difference as the Black Cats were left frustrated in the final third.

And although Hume admitted they have to do more on the front foot, he believes the experience the competition provides will be invaluable moving forward.

“It was a difficult game against a senior team but I think we’ll be better for it,” said Hume.

“We had more of the ball in the second period after what was a tight game in the first-half, but we didn’t really have any clear-cut chances.”

He added: “It’s always a learning curve when you play against teams like this in grounds like this.

“I’m sure the experience will benefit all the players and help their progression.”
