Asante Kotoko reaping benefits of Sunderland tie-up.
Dr Desmond Sarpong, chairman of Sunderland AFC’s African partner Asante Kotoko FC, has spoken of his delight at the progress being made in the relationship between the two clubs.
Asante Kotoko retained their Ghanaian Premier League title last weekend and Sarpong has been full of praise for the work Sunderland are continuing to put in to help the club move forward.
“We came over three years ago and approached Sunderland and we got an agreement in place,” Dr Sarpong told the BBC.
“They help our coaches, our facilities, our structure and they are helping us in many ways and it’s been very, very helpful to us.”
The Fabulous Lads retained the title on the final day of the campaign as Prince Baffoe’s 67th-minute goal ensured all three points against Amidaus Profs at Tema Park.
And Dr Sarpong is hopeful the consecutive league wins will continue to breed success and development into Ghana’s biggest side as they look to secure more funding from external sponsors.
“We’re excited; it’s the first time we’ve won it back-to-back for a very long time so it’s been good,” he added.
“We are looking at co-operation with international sponsors if we can find them so that we can improve the level of the game in Ghana.
“It’s difficult because we are only able to bring in money locally to run the clubs.”
