New partnership to help African households.

SAFC are proud to partner with the Nuru Fund, a charity set up by the Gentoo Group to help finance solar lamps to rural households in Africa.

The partnership, set up in 2013, has proven to be extremely beneficial, with Sunderland AFC sharing its knowledge and valuable connections in Africa to help improve health and education and create safer environments in which to live.

The charity offers small customised loans to allow rural households in Africa the opportunity to purchase solar powered lamps, helping save households 10-25% of their income and enabling children to study for longer, under better conditions.

To date, the Nuru Fund has raised over £27,000, distributed 364 loans for lamps, saved 14.2 tonnes of carbon from the environment and seen solar power advance for the Art of Living for 2,184 individuals in rural off-grid communities.

Gentoo Chief Executive, Peter Walls said: “The Nuru Fund was established by Gentoo to meet a genuine need after seeing first-hand what a difference it would make if harmful kerosene lamps could be replaced by safe solar lighting.

“We aim to create sustainable opportunities for people in Africa and through our partnership with Sunderland, we believe we are achieving that.”

By improving health, education and creating a safer environment, Gentoo and Sunderland AFC are enabling people to fulfil their unique potential. By offering micro-loans, the Nuru Fund are making solar power affordable, allowing long lasting benefits for both individuals and communities.

Sunderland AFC Commercial Director, Gary Hutchinson said: “The Nuru Fund is an amazing project and one we at the club feel privileged to be associated with. You can see they are making a real and tangible difference.

“The club has a huge following in Africa and we believe that the work we have been doing with Gentoo shows our commitment to give back to the communities in which we operate.”

Throughout this year’s football season, Sunderland have donated home game tickets and merchandise to the Nuru Fund to raffle. Income from the draws at Gentoo have generated an income of £1,654, increasing future impact.

Both the Nuru Fund and Sunderland AFC look forward to the partnership continuing in the future.
