Cabral – full name Adilson Tavares Varela – joined Sunderland in July 2013 following six years with Swiss side FC Basel.
The combative midfielder was born in Cape Verde and has been called up to their senior international squad, though he played youth international football for Switzerland.
Cabral progressed through the youth ranks at Lausanne-Sport where he made 26 first-team appearances before joining Basel.
In his debut season for the Swiss side, Cabral played eight times before moving to Sevilla Atletico in the Spanish Second Division to gain first-team experience; he played 22 times for the Spanish side before returning to Basel for the start of the 2009-10 campaign.
Cabral played 33 games in all competitions, scoring one goal, as Basel completed a league and cup double on top of a narrow exit in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League.
In the 2010-11 season, Cabral added a further 30 appearances to his Basel tally as the Swiss side won consecutive league titles as well as competing in the UEFA Champions League, with the midfielder scoring in a 3-1 victory over AS Roma.
The midfielder continued to be a regular as Basel extended their domestic dominance with their third consecutive league title as well as another Swiss Cup victory in the 2011-12 campaign.
Cabral played 29 games in all competitions, including 90 minutes as the Swiss side defeated Manchester United in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.
Last season, Cabral was ever-present for Basel as they made it four league titles in four years on top of a run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League, where they exited the competition at the hands of eventual winners Chelsea over two legs.
The midfielder joined Italian side Genoa on a season-long loan in January 2014.
