Talking points: Mel Reay on Watford test

The Lasses will be hoping to cement their place at the top of the Barclays Women’s Championship when they travel to London on Sunday for their clash with bottom-of-the-table Watford.

Mel Reay spoke to the media ahead of the match...

On last weekend’s derby day victory over Durham...

“Eight-goal thriller, probably what you want for a local derby and very exciting to be a part of. Ultimately the most important bit was that we came away with all three points.

“I was really pleased with most parts of the game, a little bit slack on the goals that we have conceded but when you want three points you almost want to get it done and move on to the next one.”

Mel on keeping the squad focused...

“I think we have to stick to our processes and not to change what we do. Our routine is the same every week in terms of our analysis, pre-match, post-match.

“Every player has 30-minute slots to go through individual clips with coach and staff, so they are well drilled and well prepared.

“It's our job to keep their feet on the ground and to make sure that they go onto the pitch and understand the game plan then it's up to them to deliver it.”

Head Coach on the title race...

“Three games to go, so there is not a lot of room for error, but we finally found our shooting boots and we were ruthless in front of goal, so we've got to take that confidence into Watford on Sunday.

“We are well aware of it, and we have spoken about it as a group, and we want to try and go and win it. We have put ourselves in a marvellous position to do that and it's in our hands.

“We know we've got to win all three games to do that, we are fully focused on Watford because we know there's no room for error.”

On Jessica Brown’s 100th appearance...

“We are really proud of her; Jess has been involved since she was a really young kid.

“I coached her when I was at Gateshead College and she has played a major part in where we are at now.

“I will always give youth a chance and it has paid dividends because she's been a consistent performer for us.”

On the fan's support...

It was fantastic to see nearly 1,500 people inside Eppleton and the unbelievable flag displays.

“There was a real atmosphere about the place and that's what we want it to feel like every week because it has certainly helped us get results.”
