Report: Blackburn Rovers Women 0-3 SAFC Women

Sunderland Women claimed an amazing victory over Blackburn Rovers Women in the Conti Cup.

Katy Watson gave the Lasses the lead in the 33rd minute.

Emily Cassap scored her first senior goal for the Club in the 74th minute, with Libbi McInnes netting the third eight minutes later, rounding off the night with three teenagers on the scoresheet.

Both sides started the game slowly, looking to keep possession and find openings in defence.

Brianna Westrup came close in the 29th minute, with Mollie Rouse’s free kick finding the Black Cats captain, but her header went wide.

After a period of Blackburn possession, the Lasses took the lead, with Emily Scarr threading a pass through to Watson, who slotted her shot under Shanell Salgado to make it 1-0.

Ellen Jones could have doubled the lead 40 minutes in, striking towards goal, but her shot was saved.

Blackburn did threaten with a few chances early into the second, the main effort falling to Georgia Walters, but her shot was saved by Megan Borthwick.

The 72nd minute saw Katie Kitching whip a deadly corner to the front post, and young Cassap leapt highest and fired a bullet header into the corner.

Mel Reay’s side sealed the deal in the 81st minute after good build-up play, with the ball eventually reaching McInnes on the right side – the midfielder drove her shot into the bottom far corner.

With two wins so far this week, the Lasses now prepare for their final game of 2023 as we host Birmingham City Women in the Barclays Women’s Championship.
