Preview: Moyes on Everton

David Moyes has tipped Everton for a successful future under Ronald Koeman ahead of Monday’s clash at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats’ Premier League campaign resumes following the international break with the Lads searching for his first league win, but they will be buoyed by a positive performance at Southampton as well as a bolstered squad.

Everton, meanwhile, have enjoyed an impressive start to their season picking up seven points from three games while remaining unbeaten in all competitions.

And although facing his former club will be special for Moyes, he’s determined to pick up a valuable three points when the Toffees come to town.

“When you become the manager of a football club you support that club and you aren’t interested in anything else, so I’m only interested in winning and winning for Sunderland.

“I think the expectations at Everton have changed dramatically but I think Ronald Koeman did a great job at Southampton, and I think he’s taken on a club that have been very well built and well prepared so with the money they’ve now got they’re in a position to really challenge the top teams.

“It is a special game because of all years I spent at Everton,” continued Moyes. “I had a great time there – some good times and some difficult times – but more importantly I worked with great people at the club.

“I was really fortunate to sign really good players who helped me along the way, and also the players that were there from day one – Tony Hibbert and Leon Osman – were really invaluable to me over the time I was there.

“I had so many good times it would be hard to pick one, but our first trip in Europe to Nuremberg was incredible and I always remember when Wayne [Rooney] scored the goal against Arsenal.

“There was also the night we beat Manchester United when Duncan Ferguson scored a header to really put us into Champions League contention, so they’re the ones that make the goosebumps come out.

“Overall it was a great period.”
