Talking points: Managers on West Brom

David Moyes and Tony Pulis have their say on Saturday’s stalemate at the Stadium of Light between Sunderland and West Brom...

General reflection

Moyes: “I was pleased with our endeavour to keep going, keep knocking at the door and trying to score a goal. I have to praise the players for that because I thought their energy was terrific. I didn’t think we deserved to go a goal down and obviously it was an uphill task for us. West Brom are the masters of making it hard and I knew it was going to be a difficult job.”

Pulis: “We are disappointed because we had 21 crosses, 18 shots and we had the opportunities. I’m very pleased with the players, they worked hard and the running stats are very, very good. The big thing is that final third and we just need to tidy up there. Nacer Chadli has been fantastic and his goal was real quality.”

Sunderland spirit

Moyes: “The lads kept going, we could go back to last week when we lost in the last minute and say well we didn’t take something, but we have been in all the games we have played. We have been in with a great chance and you would expect that because we are playing West Brom at home. We have to try and take three points but our cause to keep going and keep at it was terrific. I’m glad we were able to give the supporters something in the end because I don’t think we necessarily played that badly.”

Pulis: “Sunderland’s supporters were brilliant, they stuck with them and when they got a head of steam they got right behind them, they were fantastic.”

Late equaliser

Moyes: “We needed to find a goal from somewhere and at 1-0 we didn’t have any forward attacking options to our play so the only thing to do was to change the system and see if we could find another way through with a bit more width. We had been training Patrick (van Aanholt) further forward because he gets some goals. But what we need now is everyone else to get some goals.

Pulis: “We needed a second goal and the goal we conceded is disappointing because he hits it into the ground. We have got two players in between him and the goal and he hits it into the ground after we had made a couple of good blocks.”
