Moyes: 10 facts about the new boss

1. David Moyes was a centre-back in his playing days. He appeared for Celtic, Dunfermline Athletic and Preston North End, among other clubs.

2. Moyes started his career with Icelandic club IBV playing half a season with the youth team in 1978 before starting his senior career with Celtic two years later.

3. The Glaswegian made over 540 league appearances during his playing career winning the Scottish League Premier Division in 1981 and the Football League Third Division in 1996.

4. After moving into a coaching role at Deepdale Moyes took the top job with Preston in 1998, guiding them to promotion to Division One.

5. In March 2002 Moyes moved to Everton where he would spend the next 11 years, during which time he established the club’s place in the top half of the Premier League while also becoming one of the best managers in the country.

6. During his time at Goodison Park, Moyes was the 2003, 2005 and 2009 League Managers Association Manager of the Year.

7. He also guided the Toffees to a place in the top four and thus qualified for the UEFA Champions League during the 2004-05 season.

8. Moyes was announced as the new manager of Manchester United in May 2013 following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

9. The Scotsman departed United in April 2014 but soon returned to management in Spain with Real Sociedad, spending one year with the La Liga side before exiting in November 2015.

10. Only Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Harry Redknapp have won more Premier League games than Moyes in a managerial capacity.
