Match preview: Sunderland v Leicester City

Sunderland entertain Leicester City on Saturday when they will be aiming for a third Premier League win in four games (KO 3pm).

The Black Cats romped to victory against Hull City in their last outing at the Stadium of Light, with an eventful afternoon, including a second-half blackout, seeing Jermain Defoe score his 150th Premier League goal before Victor Anichebe struck twice.

Victory over the Tigers followed success on the south coast at AFC Bournemouth, and even though the Lads were defeated at Liverpool last weekend, spirit and confidence within the camp remains high.

Leicester City, meanwhile, have yet to win a Premier League game away from home during the current campaign.

The defending champions have been superb in the UEFA Champions League cinching a last 16 berth following the international break, but they’ve stuttered in the top flight and currently sit 14th in the table.

However, they will pose a big threat when they travel to Wearside with the usual suspects – Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez – starting to stir, with Islam Slimani also pushing for a starting spot having scored five goals in ten league appearances this season.

Danny Drinkwater remains suspended and Kasper Schmeichel is out with a broken hand, but Ben Chilwell is fit and Nampalys Mendy could feature for the first time since August.

Sunderland also have options following the return of Papy Djilobodji who is once again available after serving a one-match ban, but Paddy McNair and Lee Cattermole remain long-term absentees.

Lynden Gooch has also been ruled out of action after suffering an ankle injury earlier this weekend.

But Jan Kirchhoff and Fabio Borini are making progress with the German pushing to be involved this weekend and Borini back training.

Last season Vardy stole the show netting twice in the second period as the Foxes to a big step towards the title, and incidentally it was Leicester’s last top-flight win away from home.

But Sunderland will be hoping to take full advantage of the Foxes' away-day Blues and send the champions back to the King Power Stadium empty-handed.
