Awards: Watmore thanks supporters

Duncan Watmore capped off a ground-breaking campaign on Monday evening picking up the Supporters’ Young Player of the Year award.

The 2014-15 season saw Watmore take the Barclays U21 Premier League by storm as he claimed the Player of the Season award despite suffering a broken leg midway through the year.

And after producing similarly impressive performances for England’s under-20s he was being touted as the one to watch within the Sunderland ranks ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.

Fast forward nine months and the forward has eclipsed most if not all expectations, with a debut goal in the Barclays Premier League setting the tone for a breakthrough campaign.

“It’s been a great year for me personally,” said Watmore. “To get this award is such a nice feeling because it’s from the fans and the fans are the ones you want to impress and you want to go out and please.

“They’ve been great all this season as they always are home and away, and to get that recognition from them means a lot to me because I know how great they are and I’m glad they’ve been pleased with my performances this season.”

He continued: “It’s a big game for us on Saturday but every game is massive for us now and we know that.

“We’ve been playing well recently and getting good results so we need to carry that into Stoke, give them a good game and hopefully get the three points.”
