Coach excited for close encounter.
Sunderland under-18 coach Carlton Fairweather hopes the young Black Cats can use Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Chelsea to make improvements ahead of the visit of Manchester City to Wearside this Saturday.
Two late goals made the margin of victory greater than it perhaps should have been for the hosts and Fairweather hopes the mistakes made in the defeat at Cobham will benefit the youngsters on Saturday at the Academy of Light.
“It gives us a benchmark of where we are against a bigger side,” Farweather said. “From that benchmark we don’t think we’re far behind – we’re way up there with them to be honest.
“When you consider the fact it’s Chelsea Football Club and the amount of money they’ve got to spend [it was a good effort].
“Saturday is another test for the lads, a different type of test in the way that Man City play and a test that obviously the lads will be looking forward to it and us as staff are looking forward to it as well.
“Hopefully we’ll get something out of it but as we always say it’s about the performance and the lads learning and developing.”
