Bridges sold for record fee.

1999 – Sunderland received their then record transfer fee when Michael Bridges was sold to Leeds United for £5m.

1984 – Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson ended his third and final playing spell with Sunderland when he moved to Carlisle United on a free transfer.

1966 – Roker Park staged its only Wolrd Cup quarter-final match as the USSR beat Hungary 2-1 in front of 26,844 spectators.

1953 – Goalkeeper Harry Threadgold left Sunderland for Southend United for a fee of £3,500.
