1996 - Division One side Sunderland were denied a win over Manchester United at Old Trafford by a late goal from Eric Cantona as the game finished 2-2.

2001 - Stan Varga became the 100th Sunderland player in history to receive a red card in a competitive game after he was sent off during a goalless FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace.

1973 - Bob Stokoe recorded his first home win as Sunderland manager - a 4-0 success against Brighton.

1912 - Sunderland beat Notts County 5-0 at Roker Park, with both Mordue and Holley scoring a brace apiece.
