Cisse and Richardson strike in win over near rivals.

2008 – Djibirl Cisse and Kieran Richardson scored to give Sunderland a 2-1 win over Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light.

1978 – Jimmy Adamson left his role as Sunderland manager to join Leeds United. His assistant, Dave Merrington, took charge in a caretaker capacity.

1930 – Jarrow-born goalkeeper Jimmy Thorpe made his debut as Tommy Urwin scored a hat-trick in Sunderland’s 4-2 victory over Huddersfield Town.

1890 – Johnny Campbell scored the first league hat-trick for Sunderland in a 5-2 win at Bolton Wanderers. In fact, Campbell scored four times as the Black Cats turned round a 2-1 half-time deficit.
