Legends day as Montgomery makes debut and legend Hurley is born.
2003 – A diving header from Kevin Kyle was enough to take all three points at Bramall Lane as the Lads were reduced to 10 men against Sheffield United when Julio Arca was dismissed.
1961 – Jim Montgomery made his debut in a 5-2 home victory over Walsall in a second round League Cup tie. Brian Clough’s hat-trick in this game was a first by a Sunderland player in this competition.
1936 – Ireland international and Sunderland fans’ Player of the Century, Charlie Hurley, was born in Cork.
1912 – Goalkeeper Joe Butler signed from Glossop North End for £3,000. Following his signing, Sunderland, with two points from the opening six games, rose from near the foot of the First Division to being crowned Champions and FA Cup runners-up the following April.
