Gyan leveller caps dramatic derby clash.

16th January 2011

Asamoah Gyan scored a last-minute leveller as the Wear-Tyne derby ended all square.

Kevin Nolan fired Newcastle into the lead in the second half and the Magpies held on to the advantage until Gyan struck deep into injury time.

Both sides had early chances, with Kieran Richardson hacking Fabricio Coloccini’s effort off the line before Steve Harper did well to deny Steed Malbranque.

Nolan gave the visitors the advantage seven minutes into the second half, tucking the ball home from close range following Shola Ameobi’s knock-down.

Newcastle pressed for a second goal but couldn’t convert, and they were punished with only seconds remaining.

Jordan Henderson found Phil Bardsley, whose low cross-shot was blocked well by Harper.

However, the Newcastle keeper could only look on in horror as the ball struck the waiting Gyan and looped high into the net to secure a point for Sunderland.
