Busy day in the club's history.

2008 – Roy Keane resigned as Sunderland manager after 100 games in charge following a run of four successive home defeats. Coach Ricky Sbragia took over the reins on a temporary basis.

1999 – The Stadium of Light witnessed one of its best games as a rampant Sunderland went 4-0 up against Chelsea thanks to Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn doubles. Now Sunderland boss Gus Poyet replied twice for the visitors.

1961 – Former Sunderland captain Gary Bennett was born in Manchester.

1909 – George Holley’s double and a Harry Low strike gave the Black Cats a 3-0 home victory over Manchester United.
