1978 – Sunderland manager Jimmy Adamson resigned to join Leeds United. Assistant Dave Merrington took charge on a caretaker basis.
1930 – Jimmy Thorpe made his debut in goal for Sunderland in a 4-2 win over Huddersfield Town.
