2005 – Goalkeeper Ben Alnwick was beaten by a Julian Gray goal as Birmingham City left the Stadium of Light with all three points.
1998 – Gavin McCann signed from Everton for £300,000. During his time at Sunderland he picked up his one and only England cap, under Sven Goran Eriksson in February 2001.
1993 – Sunderland manager Terry Butcher was sacked and reserve team boss Mick Buxton took over on a temporary basis.
