2004 – Steven Caldwell scored the only goal of the game to secure victory over Leicester City at the Walkers Stadium.
1979 – Lifelong Sunderland fan Stan Cummins was signed from Middlesbrough for £300,000.
1880 – Sunderland played their first ever competitive game; playing under their original name of Sunderland & District Teachers FC. They lost 1-0 at Ferryhill.
