Club news: Period of silence

Sunderland AFC will hold a minute’s silence ahead of their Premier League game with Leicester City this weekend, as a mark of respect to the 71 people killed on board Brazilian side Chapecoense’s team flight this week.

Players from both sides will also wear black armbands as Premier League sides join forces in a  show of solidarity with the global footballing family.

The Serie A side were on their way to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana, South America’s equivalent of the UEFA Europa League, when their plane came down close to the Columbian city of Medellin.

On board the flight were the players, staff and officials of Chapecoense as well as a number of journalists on their way to cover the biggest game in the club’s history.

Supporters attending Saturday’s fixture at the Stadium of Light are asked to take their seats in sufficient time to ensure that the silence is observed in the appropriate manner.
