Awards: Defoe crowned fans' Player of the Year

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has been named Player of the Year at the Supporters’ Player of the Year Evening.

Defoe, who moved to Wearside last January, has racked up 50 appearances for the Black Cats and notched 20 goals during his time with the club, including 16 this term.

Defoe picked up the accolade alongside Duncan Watmore, who was named Young Player of the Year.

The 22-year-old received the gong after bagging four goals so far this season.

SAFC Ladies stars Beth Mead and Abbey Joice were also recognised at the presentation; with the pair scooping Player and Young Player of the Year, respectively.

The players each picked up their their awards – based on votes cast by SAFC supporters’ branches all over the country – at a special presentation night at the Stadium of Light.
