McAteer back at the SoL.

Former SAFC midfielder Jason McAteer will return to the Stadium of Light this September as special guest speaker at the club's Sporting Dinner.

McAteer amassed over 60 appearances for Sunderland and is set to add another to his tally when he returns to the club next week.

The former Republic of Ireland international kicked off his career at Bolton Wanderers, making 109 appearances between 1992 and 1995, before sealing a big money move to Liverpool.

The midfielder spent four seasons with his boyhood idols and then made the switch to Blackburn Rovers, where he helped the Lancashire club clinch promotion to the top-flight ahead of his £1 million move to the Stadium of Light.

During his spell on Wearside, he notched 5 goals in over 60 games. His first strike sealed a home win over his former club Bolton in March 2002.

He also skippered the Black Cats to the FA Cup semi-final and play-off semi finals in 2003-04.

McAteer made 52 appearances on the international stage with Ireland, scoring three goals and appearing in the 1994 and 2002 World Cups.
