Reaction: Nelson eyes response

While Sunderland under-23s suffered their first league defeat on Sunday, Andrew Nelson has already set his sights on a response.

The young Black Cats were defeated 4-2 at home to Manchester City in the Premier League 2 last weekend which brought an end to a run of three straight victories.

City held a commanding lead at half-time before Rees Greenwood halved the deficit with 30 minutes left.

Lukas Nmecha dispatched a penalty shortly after to regain City’s control and while Elliot Embleton struck back for the hosts, Nmecha made sure of the three points with a stoppage time header.

Speaking to safc.com Nelson admitted a response is key in their next match against Liverpool on Sunday.

“It was a tough game to be involved in as they have high quality players in their squad,” he said.

“We battled till the end and didn't give in which is good because it shows the lads are willing to go the extra mile to get a result.

“We now need to do that against Liverpool," he continued.

"The lads all agreed that we weren't at our best against Man City but we have a week to prepare now, to rest up, train and prepare ourselves for another tough game on Sunday against Liverpool.”
