Stryjek: Stopper hails character

Max Stryjek has praised his team-mates after they came from behind for the third time in five days to earn a point against Reading on Sunday.

After recording a share of the spoils against Derby County last Wednesday, the Black Cats dusted themselves down and produced another battling display against the Royals.

But while Omar Richards poked home an early opener, Andy Welsh’s side were faced with another uphill task as they went about trying to claw their way back into contention.

Despite squandering a flurry of chances, Elliot Embleton linked up with Rees Greenwood and Joel Asoro before George Honeyman was freed to ram home and level the fixture.

Sunderland continued to lay siege to the Royals’ goal but were unable to turn the game on its head as the visitors held onto a point.

Speaking to safc.com the stopper hailed his team-mates’ efforts and admitted their hard work is beginning to pay off.

“We had some good chances but unfortunately we didn’t take them,” he said.

“We have to respect the point because they were a really good side, but we know we can do better.

“We started a bit sloppy but after that we played well and in the second half we produced some good stuff but we didn’t take our chances.

“We didn’t give up and that was great to see because we showed good character,” he continued.

“It’s difficult because we always want to win games and we have to take the points and be pleased with that.

“We have got good spirit, we kept going and I think we created more than enough chances to win the game.”
