Academy: Young relishing Everton encounter

Jacob Young is hopeful Sunderland under-18s can banish their early season woes when they welcome Everton to the Academy of Light on Saturday.

The young Black Cats have experienced a tough start to the U18 Premier League and remain bottom, still chasing their first win of the campaign.

With a solid week of preparations under the Lads’ belts, Young has admitted he is keen for the Lads to bounce back from the disappointment of last weekend’s defeat at the final hurdle.

While Sonny Best’s close-range finish had given Sunderland an early lead, two goals in the final 10 minutes saw the Rams turn the game on its head.

However, Young believes there is no time to dwell on what’s happened and has called for his team-mates to roll their socks up and get on with it.

“Hopefully we can bounce back this weekend because we were 1-0 up for so long,”

“We played well in the first period and we took that into the start of the second half, but we tailed away in the end and that was hard to take.

“Our job is to go out tomorrow, show some character, show some desire and really do our best to make it hard for them.

“We want to make sure we get a result out of the game tomorrow. A point or three points, any kind of result is vital for us against Everton.”

He continued: “At the moment results haven’t quite gone our way but as a team we are working hard and I think if we continue to do that then it will eventually pay off."
