Back in action: Talbot on winning return

James Talbot believes there is plenty of room for improvement following Sunderland under-23s victory over Blackburn Rovers on Friday.

The Irishman completed his first 90 minutes of the season after recovering from an injury which had kept him sidelined since August.

While the development squad endured a challenging evening at Arsenal last week, the 18-year-old inspired Andy Welsh’s team to victory in the Premier League Cup as he made a string of fine saves to preserve Josh Maja’s solitary goal.

Speaking to safc.com, Talbot admitted while he is delighted to be back, there is plenty of things to work on both from a personal and team point of view.

“We weren’t really happy with our performance because we thought we could play better especially at home,” he said.

“You take a 1-0 win and a clean sheet every day. I was pleased with that especially as it was my first game back but my kicking could be better.

“I want to get more minutes on the pitch but from a team point of view it was good to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat.”

He continued: “To get a clean sheet after Arsenal is important and while the Lads aren’t too happy about the performance the win was the most important thing.”
