Disappointed Gardner looking for Cup boost.

Craig Gardner cut a frustrated figure after Sunderland’s loss to Liverpool but wants his team mates to put that defeat behind them and turn their attention to Saturday’s FA Cup with Budweiser clash.

Following the setback at Anfield, the midfielder conceded: “We’ve had a tough Christmas period and we knew Liverpool was going to be one of the toughest games.

It was a tough game but we can’t dwell on it. I could make up excuses, but I won’t – we need to move on.

“They had control of the game. We had two or three chances to score but we never took them - and that was the difference – Liverpool took their chances.

“It was a tough game but we can’t dwell on it,” Gardner continued. “I could make up excuses, but I won’t – we need to move on.”

The Black Cats travel to the Reebok Stadium on Saturday for a third round FA Cup tie with Bolton Wanderers.

“We need to pick ourselves up and go again. There are two important games coming up.” Gardner added.

“There’s Bolton in the Cup on Saturday. We want to win that to progress in the competition and then a home game with West Ham where we need to pick up points and start being the team we know we can be.”
