Pop sensations to kick off ‘Where We Are’ Tour on Wearside.

Sunderland’s Stadium of Light has pulled off another major music coup, with the announcement today that boyband sensation One Direction will kick off the UK leg of their ‘Where We Are’ 2014 World Tour on Wearside.

Stars Harry, Zayn, Liam, Louis and Niall will take to the stage at the home of Sunderland AFC on Wednesday 28th May, 2014, as they embark on what will be their first global stadium tour.

The Stadium of Light is one of only four UK venues to host the tour – the others being Manchester’s Ethiad Stadium, Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Wembley Stadium, London.

The band, which has sold over 14 million singles and 8 million albums, has already amassed two BRIT Awards and three MTV Video Music Awards in their fledgling career. Having achieved instant success in the UK following on from their stint on X-Factor in 2010, the band also took the US by storm, with their last album debuting at number one in the Billboard 200, becoming the first boyband in US chart history to land two number one albums in a calendar year.

Tickets for what is anticipated to be the biggest concert ever staged at the Stadium of Light, will go on sale from 10am on Saturday 25 May, 2013.

Tickets will only be available through official ticketing websites and phonelines (see below for full details), there will be no ticket sales from the Stadium of Light box office.

SAFC Commercial Director, Gary Hutchinson, said: “This is set to be the biggest concert the stadium has played host to. One Direction really are the band of the moment, with a massive international profile and fanbase, so to secure one of only four UK stadium gigs that they will be performing is fantastic for the club, the City of Sunderland and the wider North East region.

“Playing host to the opening night of the tour will also ensure a world-wide profile for the Stadium of Light and further cements our credentials as one of the country’s top venues for major music shows.”

Cllr Paul Watson, Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: "One Direction are one of the biggest bands in the world at the moment, so it's fantastic that they are choosing Sunderland as part of their first stadium tour.

“This year's concerts are set to be the biggest and best yet, bringing thousands of people and millions of pounds into our economy, and the fact that we're already confirming acts for next year is proof of the fantastic work taking place behind the scenes to ensure that Sunderland is always top of the list for major bands and artists on tour."
