Physios gather at training ground.

Sunderland’s Academy of Light played host to a new and innovative physiotherapy course recently as representatives from clubs around the country headed to the north east.

Medical staff from outfits including Manchester City, Rangers and Middlesbrough spent two days at the Black Cats’ training ground for training based around the assessment and rehabilitation of injured players.

The course, led by leading physios Ben Cormack and Mark Leyland of Cor-Kinetic Movement, was one of a number set to be held on Wearside with the club looking to become a leader in education and training.

The Academy of Light boasts superb treatment and rehabilitation facilities with a dedicated team of staff working across the first, under-21 and under-18 teams as well as supporting the club’s Academy youngsters.

Senior physiotherapist Peter Brand said: “We have world-class facilities here at the Academy of Light and the courses we have held so far have been a big success.

“Putting on educational events is something we have been trying to focus on, from local events to bigger, national courses.

“As a club we are committed to excellence and the response we’ve had suggests others are eager to learn from and with us.”
