Charity scheme funded by Port.
The Port of Tyne has committed to supporting young people in South Tyneside through a new partnership with the Foundation of Light, the registered charity of Sunderland AFC.
The Port will fund the delivery of 10 Junior Sports Leader Award courses organised by the charity in schools throughout South Tyneside.
The course helps young people develop self-confidence, self-esteem and vital personal skills such as communication and planning through the context of sports coaching. The Port of Tyne partnership is expected to reach 150 youngsters aged 14+ years over the current school year.
Speaking of the donation Lesley Spuhler, Chief Executive of the Foundation of Light, said: “Port of Tyne’s support of this programme shows a real commitment to the youth of the area and will have positive long-term implications for the wider community.
“We’re very proud to be able to announce this partnership and applaud Port of Tyne’s community spirit.”
Andrew Moffat, Port of Tyne Chief Executive, said: “The Port is proud to be supporting the Foundation of Light contributing to the development of the local community and young people.”
The Foundation of Light is one of the country’s best developed football charities working with more than 42,000 children and adults every year across Durham, Sunderland and South Tyneside.
The Port of Tyne contributed almost £500m to the local economy and supported almost 10,000 jobs in 2011- its programme of corporate responsibility is designed to support community engagement.
