Award-winning programme to be run free of charge.

An award winning charity programme which encourages family learning will be on offer free of charge at one of the region’s most successful schools.

The Foundation of Light’s Family Learning Through Football initiative will host three days of activities to encourage families to take new skills and learning sessions at Harton Technology College in South Shields.

More than 1,750 families have taken part in the programme over the past twelve months which includes classroom learning along with physical activities to encourage learning together and improving communication skills.

Families can take part in the free family fun course between 28-31 May from 9am-12noon where Foundation of Light staff will be running family games and leisure activities for youngsters aged 5-14 years and their parents.

The three day activities mark two years of work between the Foundation of Light and Harton Technology College which has been successful in winning national awards.

Foundation of Light’s Head of Lifelong Learning, Matt Hill, commented: “Harton Technology College have been incredibly supportive in helping us grant youngsters and families access to learning and sport and we look forward to working with them for a long time.

“The state of the art Sport Centre provides us with a fantastic learning environment and has really allowed us to help learners and participants make the most of our programmes.”

Harton Technology College Executive Head Teacher Ken Gibson said: “The work that the Foundation of Light does is fantastic and they have really helped us to strengthen our links with the local community even further. Family Learning in particular has helped us engage parents, grandparents and carers and it has a huge effect not just on participants’ education but health too.”

Harton Sports Centre Manager Ashley Pickup added: “It’s great that a Premier League football club like Sunderland AFC are engaging youngsters at grassroots level through the Foundation and we’re very proud to be working with them.”

Family Learning through Football is available to primary schools in the South Tyneside, Sunderland and Durham areas. Family Learning in South Shields is funded by South Tyneside MBC Family Adult Community Learning.

The Foundation of Light (formerly known as SAFC Foundation) is the registered charity of Sunderland AFC which works with more than 42,000 people every year. The organisation uses the power of football to inspire, involve and educate children, families and adults across the North East through programmes that can improve their lives. Structurally and financially independent of the football club the organisation relies on fundraising for 90% of project costs.
