Preview: Lasses host Addicks in final home game

Sunderland Women play their final home match of the season as they host Charlton Athletic Women at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground on Sunday (KO 2pm).

The Lasses are currently second in the Barclays Women’s Championship, and two wins would guarantee promotion to the Women’s Super League.

Permutations

With two games remaining, Crystal Palace lead the title charge with 42 points, but Sunderland and Charlton are close behind on 40 and 39 points respectively. Southampton are six points behind and could mathematically still clinch it.

Providing Palace avoid defeat against Lewes, the Lasses must win to take the promotion push to the final game, a potential showdown at Selhurst Park against the league leaders.

If Lewes were to beat the Eagles, a Sunderland win would put the final game back in Red & White hands.

If the Lasses were to beat Charlton, a win against the Eagles on the last day of the season would mean promotion to the Women’s Super League for the first time since 2017-18.

Opposition

Sitting third in the table, Charlton are also still well in the promotion race, with a final-day fixture against fourth-placed Southampton also on the cards.

Karen Hills’ side have the best away record in the division, taking 26 points from a possible 30, scoring 13 and only conceding two on the road.

The reverse fixture saw Katy Watson score a 95th-minute equaliser to cancel out Tegan McGowan’s 90th-minute goal, a crucial draw at the top of the table.
